Halo 4 Getting Call-of-Duty-ed

It’s been reported on NeoGAF that the latest issue of Game Informer has some juicy details on the newest Halo. Every change sounds very “Call of Duty” and I’m worried they’re attempting to stay cool by copying the popular kid on campus. You will be able to earn Spartan Points every match allowing you to purchase new pieces of armor, abilities, and even new co-op missions. There hasn’t been any mention of Firefight, but the new Spartan Ops mode (sounds familiar) will allow players to join up and fight against A.I. across numerous objectives and maps.

The article also mentions that sprint will no longer be an armor ability. It will come standard with every multiplayer class like some other game I’m forgetting the name of. The jetpack, hologram, and active camo are expected to make a return with a new ability called Forerunner Vision, allowing you to see through walls.

Call of Halo

For whatever reason, Elites will not be playable in multiplayer anymore. So far, they’ve said they are focusing on Spartans vs. Spartans and that’s that. Not too much of a shame on this one. I never thought it added much.

Matches will now be joinable in mid game and hopefully destroys the days of one poor sap, who doesn’t want the penalty of quitting, stuck fighting eight enemies who spawn camp him/her for twenty minutes. You can also forget about waiting to get back into the fight after a death. Halo 4 allows you to spawn immediately after getting killed with a button press. I SWEAR I’ve seen that before…

Finally, what I think is the worst thing to happen to Halo since its inception, weapon spawns are now random. Players will no longer be able to rush to certain locations to hog power weapons and turn the tide of the battle. This was apparently done to even the playing field with newbs. This way, the expert player won’t be able to pwn his worthless enemy as hard as he could if he knew where all the weapons spawned. God forbid the better player wins.

Halo-4-Exile-Multiplayer-Map-2.jpg

This destroys Halo. I already found it to be a shame when Halo Reach allowed you to bring a custom gun to the fight. People didn’t hunt for the weapons on the map anymore. Now, with random drops, no one’s going to be searching for guns unless they accidentally trip on one. The map weapons always made Halo what it was. It created choke points. It temped players to dangerous locations. It kept the fights interesting. Those power weapons were important for victory. It added a deep new level of strategy besides just everyone shooting each other.

I was cautiously optimistic about the first non-Bungie Halo, but now I’m getting scared. This information contains gameplay found in a million other games. Nothing popped out as anything unique or interesting. Halo has always lead the genre in new places every shooter dreams of emulating. It pains me to think 343 might turn it into a copycat.

The update is here in 3D!!!

By: Landon "DefHalan" Dastrup

That’s right. The 3DS has updated adding many new features. There is a new application that came with the update as well. Nintendo Zone seems like what Nintendo tried to do with the download stations in stores. (Did anyone use those?) You can go to participating stores and access free and exclusive content. It doesn’t really blow my hair back, and I don’t know of anywhere near me that is “participating.”

Now recording 3D video is finally here. You can record up to 10 minutes at a time of 3Dvideo. Just in time for the holiday season. You can have all those warm fuzzy moments of opening presents, playing with new toys, and fighting your brother for the cooler toy all recorded in 3D! There is also a way to do Stop Motion so you can create your own Robot Chicken style shorts in 3D! You can also set the camera to do Interval Shots so you could have it take a picture every 5 seconds and make a video out of it in 3D! Montage lets you record for a little, stop, and then continue recording in the same video stream later in 3D!

Now for the good stuff, Mii Plaza update. There are new picture panels in Puzzle Swap. If you haven’t gotten all the old panels, that’s ok, you can still get those. The new panels require more pieces so you will have to meet more people to get them all. Another new feature is Find Mii II. With new land to explore, more hats to wear, and more monsters to fight, it’s quite the update. Sadly, to play Find Mii II, you will have to get all the hats from the first. Flip on your 3DS and you should get an update prompt automatically. Enjoy!

Son of a B 360! Delays. Delays. Delays.

By: David "DR. G" Galanter

Pissed about the delays in "today's" 360 dashboard update? Even more pissed you have no idea why your 360 isn't updating? Well, it seems like the update itself is having some problems getting its ass server side for download. There isn't much info on what's going on, but you can follow Larry Hryb's (Major Nelson's) Twitter to stay up to date.

newxboxexperiencemetroui-1.png

The latest update, as of now, states that they're still working to get the new dashboard live and there will be more news about it in the afternoon. It's afternoon now and still no news. There is no mention of the big update getting pushed back to tomorrow (or even later), so hopefully it's still coming today.

Keep an eye on Major Nelson's Twitter for more info. We'll post an update on this story when (or if) the download goes live today.

Some Features Pushed Back in Tomorrow's 360 Dashboard Update

By: David "DR. G" Galanter

Waiting for that sweet 360 Dashboard update tomorrow? Well this might piss you off slightly. Earlier in the year, Microsoft claimed they were releasing an update for their console that would enable YouTube, HBO GO, and a few other apps. When the big M announced a big update for 360 on Dec. 6th, most of us assumed this would be the one to carry all of the fancy new apps. Unfortunately, that's not happening.

It appears that quite a few apps won’t make it into tomorrow's update. YouTube will launch "later in December" and HBO GO is looking at a release date in "early 2012." About a week ago, we ran a news story about Verizon FioS coming to 360. Unfortunately, this functionality is getting pushed back as well.

Of course, Microsoft never really promised these apps would come on the 6th. We all simply hoped. Seemed like a safe bet considering a lot of these functions were discussed months ago. Guess it's gonna take longer to work out the kinks.

Verizon FioS on your 360

Kotaku reported this morning that customers of the Verizon FioS service will be able to watch a limited number of channels on their Xbox 360. Unfortunately, you have to be subscribed to both Verizon's internet and TV package (and Xbox Live) in order to take advantage of the feature. The Xbox 360 functionality will support Kinect to surf around the menus, but there will only be 26 channels available when the feature launches next month.

Verizon will have an app on the dashboard in a month
Dash

Verizon is also offering a deal to anyone who wants to jump ship from their current non-Verizon service. For $89.99 a month, they will provide you with FioS TV, FioS internet (35mbps up and down), Verizon voice service, a year of Xbox Live, and a copy of Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary.

The deal doesn't sound too shabby but the 360 benefit seems to be pretty low at only 26 channels. Verizon said they will be adding more over time, so it could become a sweeter deal in the months to come. The offer is only available through Jan. 21st. Make sure to check the Verizon website to see if FioS is available in your area. I've lived in a few locations around L.A. Not one had FioS as an option. Good luck to you my fellow entertainment whores!

New 360 Dashboard Update December 6th

If you've been in the preview program, this might not be that exciting to you (it might not even be that exciting to you anyway). The new 360 dashboard update is being released officially on the 6th of December and will carry a few changes.

Bing will be added to the console allowing people to use Kinect to simply say the title of a game or movie and have the Xbox find it. The dashboard will also have some aesthetic changes. It will embody Microsoft's new "Metro" design and the Kinect Hub and standard dashboard are one and the same now. There are a few other random changes (like being able to post achievements to facebook) but this update doesn't sound as content heavy as some of the dashboard updates in the past.

I was also under the impression this update would let you save your profile to the cloud, allowing you to avoid recovering your account at a friend's house. However, I'm not sure if Microsoft will follow up on that. We'll find out on December 6th!

Nintendo at the L.A. Auto Show!

This is the time of year where real MEN come out to enjoy the hard sounds of engines revving and tires screeching! The burning smell of exhaust and new-car fuels the muscles of a total road warrior! Oh yeah. It’s that time of year. Where people like us charge right into the L.A. Convention Center, walk past all those men, and drool at the Nintendo booth! Yaaaay (throws confetti)! Nintendo made a very unusual appearance at the Auto Show this year to unveil a project they’ve been working on with West Coast Customs. Not too many details were given, but we arrived at the show seeing two vehicles covered with a sheet. Oh yeah. Let’s see them.

Reggie Fils-Aime (President and COO of Nintendo of America) took the stage and started to talk briefly about the Mario Kart franchise. Mario Kart has sold over 80 million copies around the world and plans to launch its latest installment on December 4th with Mario Kart 7. To promote the new game, Reggie said Nintendo had an idea for a couple custom vehicles and approached West Coast Customs to see if they could help make their idea a reality. They took the sheets off the mystery vehicles and BAM! They exploded. Nah, wishful thinking. I enjoy epicness. Close though! The two cars were fully functional life sized versions of Mario’s Standard Kart and Luigi’s Bumble V Kart! Oh yeah. They looked mighty hot.

The CEO of West Coast Customs (Ryan Friedlinghaus) was then invited on stage to explain the cars and talk about how they’re totally race-able! He found out when one of his employees totally PWND him the night before the presentation. The presentation was short but we didn’t mind. It was time to get a closer look at the cars and get some sweet hands on time with Mario Kart 7!

Nintendo was doing the same thing they’ve done with the last few conventions where the 3DS was present. The consoles are chained to a crew of Nintendo gals whose job it is to let you play, tell you about the game, and distract you enough so you don’t steal it. My crew and I started a game with a few of the Nintendo girls and got in some 8 player action (the ‘giggity’ is way too obvious here and I’ll have no part of it)! Mario Kart 7 allows you to customize everything. You can choose what kind of glider you want, tires, kart, etc. Every choice obviously has a give and take as you watch the kart’s statistics fall in certain categories as you’re deciding what parts to use. This gives the series a bit more of a “hardcore” approach, but for many of us who love Mario Kart, this is a good thing.

The gameplay is just as solid as ever with a ton of new tracks and a few new power ups. The new powerups Nintendo was really boasting at the event were the Super Leaf, Fire Flower, and Lucky 7. The Super Leaf gives your cart a Tanooki Tail (possible cross advertising for Super Mario 3D land?). This allows you to swat away hazards on the road. The Fire Flower gives you the same power here as every other Mario game it’s featured in, but this time you can throw fire at other racers instead of Goomba AIs. The Lucky 7 is the most intense one. This will spawn 7 items around your kart just waiting to PWN someone on your command.

The game will also feature Nintendo Wi-Fi play and take advantage of the 3DS StreetPass functionality. If you walk past someone else who’s carrying a 3DS, the systems will automatically trade scores and win/loss records.

Overall, the show was short but plenty fun. We got to see the karts for real! After many years of racing these puppies digitally, we finally got to stand right next to one. The game itself is shaping up to be the best Mario Kart so far. Our very own Landon Dastrup commented, “It takes everything they did right with Mario Kart DS and improves it.” Make sure to check out all the pictures from the event by clicking on our new “Event Pics” section on the sidebar. Don’t forget to come back in a few weeks for our full review on Mario Kart 7.

First Wii U Launch Title

The Wii U is still a mystery to many people. It’s hard to say if you are excited for the new Nintendo Console when you haven’t seen any real games for it. Ninja Gaiden III: Razor’s Edge (insert AC/DC remark here) is a type of game many gamers aren’t use to playing on a Nintendo System, but it will be a launch title for Wii U. The Ninja Gaiden series hasn’t been on a Nintendo system since 1995, when they released the first three Ninja Gaiden games in a collection for the SNES. It will be an exciting game to play day one of Wii U Launch and will show just how powerful the system is. Many people are still wondering about the Razor’s Edge subtitle and how it will be different than the PS3 version, but as a fortune cookie once said “Time will tell all.”

Gotham City Impostors Release Date!

Get your skates and grapple hooks ready. Load up your shotgun and put on a cape. January 10th is going to be one hell of a day. Gotham City Impostors is almost upon us. With a closed PC Beta last month and an open Xbox/PS3 Beta next month, Monolith is working towards making an amazing game. So many things are customizable and it all affects gameplay, such as: Weapons, Clothing, Gadgets, Appearances, and even player movement. I can’t wait to jump into the shoes of Gotham City’s unsung heroes, The Bats, and blow away crazy people, The Jokerz.

Gotham City Imposters supports 12 player verses modes. Monolith Productions, the mad men and women behind F.E.A.R., Condemned, and Aliens vs. Predator 2 bring us out of Batman’s suit into the streets of Gotham and its more insane citizen’s lives. Sign up for the Beta at http://www.gothamcityimpostors.com/

Wii U Might Support More Than One Tablet After All

An anonymous source told Develop today, there might be a chance the Wii U will support two tablets. Previously, Nintendo had claimed only one Tablet would be supported by the console and would not be sold separately. Rumor is Nintendo was afraid more than one tablet would scare off more casual gamers from multiplayer, but after all the questions they got about two touch screen controllers at E3, they decided to look into the issue further.

Develop's source also claims a few other pieces of the system's hardware haven't been set in stone yet. The amount of RAM and the processor speed have not been decided on yet. The source also says we will find the answers to all of these questions next E3, as the details of the hardware should be finalized by then.

The tablets themselves don't have heavy duty processors in them. All the imagery is streamed from the system. Hopefully this will keep the cost of the controller down if they do decide to sell it separately. Thinking about how much they charge for controllers now makes me weary of what one of those might cost with a touch screen on it.

6,000 copies of Modern Warfare 3 Stolen in France

A major heist was reported yesterday by a French site TFI News. Two masked crooks crashed into a delivery truck in south Paris carrying around 6,000 copies of Modern Warfare 3. The robbers then used tear gas on the driver allowing them enough time to steal the contents of the truck. The stolen items are estimated to be worth 400,000 Euros (about 550,000 U.S.D.).

It's curious that the theives decided to knock over this truck in particular. Anyone who follows the news knows that playing video games before their release dates can get you banned from playing online. The games were also only stolen a day before release, so it's not like each copy has an extra ordinary value attached to it.

Hopefully these questionable weirdos will be caught soon. I can't imagine them easily being able to sell all of that without suspicion. As long as you pick up your copy from an actual store, you should be safe.

Rainbow Six Patriots Announced

It's been three years since any peep of a Rainbow Six title. A few rumors have surfaced in the past year, but nothings been concrete. Over the weekend, Ubisoft announced they are working on a new Rainbow Six game called Rainbow Six Patriots. There aren't too many details, but it was confirmed that Ubisoft Montreal will be developing the game along side Ubisoft Toronto and Ubisoft Red Storm.

Ubisoft also released a target gameplay video to show the kind of game they're aiming to make. You can see the video on IGN. It isn't beta footage or actual gameplay in any way. It is simply an example of what they're going for. If the game turns out anything like the video, it looks like this new installment features a lot of the same mechanics as the last few titles. Rappelling, taking cover, and ordering your squad around were all shown. Not everything looked completely familiar. The beginning of the video requires you (the player) to leisurely press buttons to watch T.V. or kiss your lady.

It'll be interesting to see if the game actually turns out like the video, or if they make some drastic decisions during development. The games release date is set for 2013, so there's still a long way to go in production. Just a few more long years of waiting and we'll have our answer.

Grand Theft Auto 5 Trailer Released!

The trailer for Grand Theft Auto 5 is live (you can watch it on pretty much any site. 1up, Game Trailers, etc.). The game was rumored to take place in L.A. this time around, and the rumors seem to be true. There's no way to tell if you are going to be in L.A. the entire game, but it certainly seems to be a large part of the game.

It's not exactly in L.A. Per se. In true Grand Theft Auto style, They renamed the city and some of the cities around it (The Hollywood sign says Vinewood instead). However, the skyline is still very similar. You can still see the U.S. Bank building and a few other recognizable structures. Even a freeway or two seems to have kept its original name. The trailer shows a sign for the I-5 on the road.

The story so far seems pretty basic, but its still way to early to start guessing plot points. The trailer features dialogue suggesting that our main man moved to the city to escape his life of crime, never to return again. I'm sure it'll work out swimmingly!

Truthfully, I can't wait. I had a nerdgasm when i was able to cruise around a town I knew in L.A. Noire, I look forward to doing the same in today's version of the city. Again, there's no way to tell how accurate the city will be, but it still tugged on a heart string or two to see my city represented as accurately as i could see from the trailer.

Promise Broken: Turns out 1943 Doesn't Come with Battlefield 3

1up.com reported this morning that Battlefield 3 is missing a piece of content EA promised us back in June. At E3, the company told us they would include a copy of Battlefield 1943 with the PS3 version of Battlefield 3. Turns out this isnt entirely accurate... at all.

Not too long ago, EA also announced the DLC maps would come to PS3 a week before 360. What was seen as simply another perk of the the ps3 version, was actually a replacement. When the game came out, a short explanation was posted on the game's twitter feed, saying the week early maps are there to compensate for the missing 1943. It's bad enough to promise a piece of content and not deliver, it's even worse to not let your fans know till after launch.

The release on both platforms have been everything but smooth. I was attempting to play online with friends (yes, i have them) on the 360 version last night, and the EA servers were down. After deciding to just play single player, the opening cutscene repeated multiple times before i had to quit out manually. Apparently this is a known issue. A lot of titles have a rough day one, but this is among some of the worst.

Anyone else having the same issues? Post in our comments about it! Don't worry. People will be nice. It's the internet!

Grand Theft Auto V Announced!

It's been three years without a peep from the Houser brother's Grand Theft Auto team at Rockstar North. That's a long time to wait for just a simple announcement of their next title. Today, the wait is over.

Rockstar updated their website this morning with a picture that simply says "Grand Theft Auto V Trailer 11.02.11." This means we still have a little more than a week before actually seeing the game, but at least Rockstar has finally admitted that they're working on it.

It'll be interesting to see what GTAV will look like. GTA3, Vice City, and San Andreas all looked very similar. Rockstar started fresh with GTAIV, with no cross overs or cameos of characters from the last 3 games. Since this new iteration has a number (instead of a subtitle), It's hard not to wonder if it will stay in the same universe as GTAIV, or if it's starting anew again.

We will have more details on November 2nd when the trailer launches.

Rumor: Next Xbox to be Unveiled at E3 2013

A website called Develop seems to have important information about the launch of Microsoft's next console. Their sources indicate, "from chip manufactures to middleware firms," the next Xbox will be revealed at E3 2013 and have an intended release date for the same year (even though it's likely to slip into 2014).

There has been no official word from Microsoft on the matter. It's tough to believe rumors like this when the past couple years have been flooded with stories about the next Xbox. Earlier this year, a snitch from EA claimed they already had the dev kits for the new console. Other developers also had leaks that game development was already starting on the new console as well. Although, most of these rumors claim the unveiling will be sooner at E3 2012. Reports of job listings about the development of the next Xbox have also surfaced.

There's obviously no way to tell if the developer's leaks are correct until next year, or if Develop's information is accurate until the year after. Keep in mind, half the rumors about the next Xbox have already been debunked. I remember a story a few years ago claiming Elder Scrolls 5 was going to be an MMO for the next Xbox. Patience young Jedi, and our console will reveal itself.

Sign up to be a Guinea Pig for the New Xbox 360 Dashboard Update!

Love suffering through glitches and freezes so the rest of us don't have to? Sign up for the Xbox 360 dashboard update preview program! You'll get to download the new dashboard and try out all the new features before release (which still has no confirmed date).

You can sign up for the preview program on Major Nelsons's blog here. The blog entry also contains details of the new update. You'll be able to play around with the new Kinect controls, better Facebook integration, and the new "beacon" function (Allowing you to send mass invites to all your friends. That totally doesn't sound annoying at all!). The feature i can't wait for is cloud saves. You can back up your Xbox Live profile and game saves to the cloud, and easily access them from any console. The perfect weapon against forgetting your damn memory card or flash drive.

The new update should be completely compatible with the older versions of the dashboard. So, engaging in party chat with friends who don't have the new dashboard yet should still work seamlessly (should).

The date for the preview program hasn't been announced yet, but you should be notified via email when it does (if you signed up).

Oh Sony, You Tickle Us

Once again the electronics giant is under attack. It was reported on 1up.com earlier today that Sony is suffering something of a security breach. The problem isn't as dangerous or large as what happened back in April, but it was confirmed that several PSN accounts have had multiple login failures on them.

If you sign in to your PSN account today and it forces you to log in again manually, you could be a part of the 0.1% of accounts affected. Sony assures the public that this is not a continuation of the big one earlier this year, and that any information used to hack into users accounts were obtained through other (illegal) means. No credit card are at risk this time around (although Sony will refund any fraudulent charges if anything happens).

The multiple failed log in attempts could lead to some users accounts being locked when you try to sign on legitly. If your account is locked, you should have received an email detailing how to unlock it and change your password.

Sony's getting really good at this "getting hacked" thing. Hopefully they'll make that an Olympic sport this year, otherwise Sony might just retain a talent for security breaches with nothing to show for it but a million angry customers. Poor rich incompetents.

Mass Effect Multiplayer Announced

That's right. From the mouth of the man himself, Casey Hudson, a multiplayer experience for all who will play Mass Effect 3! It is a four player co-op experience that if played, will boost the chances of Commander Shepard kicking Reaper butt cheeks! If ignored, and a player opts not to play the multiplayer, it will not negatively affect the single player campaign. So it's a win-win on all fronts!

The co-op missions are mostly about capturing and defending key positions around the galaxy in aid of the galactic war. Players will have the choice of selecting a variety of Alien races, and corresponding classes, and teaming up with buds to kick ass. Characters chosen on the multiplayer will have their own leveling aside from the single player, and moral choices from ME1 and 2 will not impact any element in the Multiplayer. The multiplayer is being handled by Bioware's newer crew in Montreal, and will not take away from the single player.

Along with the news of the multiplayer, Bioware announced that a system which determines battle-readiness for facing the Reapers will be available dubbed Galaxy at War. It is a quirky way of managing player stats that will include multiplayer progression, and hints at other possible Mass Effect apps and games. Meaning the multiplayer will not be the only manner in which to raise the survival rate of the war. Again, using the Galaxy at War system is optional, and will not negatively affect the single player. It really is a WIN-WIN!

All in all, Casey Hudson assured that the best possible outcome can be achieved by just playing the Single Player campaign without further association with the multiplayer or future apps. So for all you worrywarts (DefHalan!), skipping the multiplayer will not take away from the experience.

Keep an eye, ear, sixth sense open for more details as the release date approaches! Visit Bioware.com for more news!

(Great.... Now should I be Turian Infiltrator, or Quarian Engineer? Or maybe Krogan Vangard? Decisions decisions.)
